Why install a water filtration system?

Mains water in the UK is safe to drink, but it can still carry chlorine, sediment from old pipes and, in London especially, a lot of limescale.

Better water quality

Sediment, rust and chlorine taken out before the water reaches your taps.

Better taste and smell

A carbon filter removes the chlorine taste, so tap water is pleasant to drink again.

Less limescale

Softened water means no crusty taps, no scale in the kettle and shower screens that stay clear.

Protects your appliances

Boilers, cylinders, washing machines and dishwashers last longer without scale building up inside them.

Saves money

Less bottled water, less descaler, lower energy use and fewer repairs over the years.

Water filtration systems we install

The right system depends on what is actually in your water and what you want from it. We test first, then recommend.

Whole-house water filters

Fitted on the incoming main so every tap, shower and appliance gets filtered water. A sediment stage catches sand, grit and rust, and a carbon stage takes out chlorine taste and smell. We fit them with isolation valves and a bypass so cartridges can be changed without turning the house water off.

  • Sediment and carbon stages
  • Isolation valves and bypass
  • Pressure gauge to show when a filter needs changing

Water softeners

London water is some of the hardest in the country. A softener takes out the calcium and magnesium that cause limescale, so kettles, showers, taps and glass screens stay clean and soap actually lathers.

  • Sized to your household
  • Block salt or granular models
  • Drinking water tap kept unsoftened

Protecting your boiler and cylinder

Limescale is what kills hot water cylinders, boiler heat exchangers and electric shower elements. Softening the water that feeds them keeps them working efficiently for longer, which is why we often fit a softener alongside a new unvented cylinder.

  • Stops scale on heat exchangers
  • Fitted with new cylinders
  • Often a warranty condition in hard water areas

Drinking water systems

Under-sink filters and reverse osmosis systems for water that tastes clean straight from the tap. Reverse osmosis removes far more than a standard filter, including dissolved minerals, and runs to its own dedicated tap at the kitchen sink.

Servicing and filter changes

A filter only works while the cartridge is clean, and a softener only works while it regenerates properly. We change cartridges, check pressures and flow, set up and service softener control valves, and look over every fitting for leaks.

  • Cartridge changes on schedule
  • Softener control valves set up
  • Leak and pressure checks

How an installation runs

Water test and survey

We test hardness and check the supply, the incoming pressure and flow, and where the system can go: under the sink, in a utility room or next to the cylinder.

Recommendation and quote

The system we recommend and why, what it costs to fit and what it costs to run each year in salt and cartridges.

Installation

Water off at the main, the system connected in with isolation valves, a bypass and the non-return valves the regulations require, and a drain run where a softener needs one.

Flush, test and hand over

The system flushed through, pressure and flow checked, every joint checked for leaks and the softener programmed. We show you how to add salt or change a cartridge.

Honest advice

We test your water first and recommend what it actually needs. If a simple filter does the job, you will not be sold a bigger system.

Qualified and registered

Gas Safe registered, so if the water treatment is part of a boiler or cylinder job, one team does all of it.

Priced before we start

A written quote with the system, the filters and the scope on it. The invoice matches what you agreed to.

What affects the price

What we look atWhy it changes the cost
Type of systemA single under-sink filter is a small job. A softener, a multi-stage whole-house system or reverse osmosis is considerably more.
Number of stagesSediment, carbon, softening and UV each add equipment and connections.
Where it goesClose to the incoming main is simplest. Further away means more pipework, and a softener needs a drain and a socket nearby.
Existing plumbingOld lead or iron pipework, or a stopcock that will not shut off, has to be dealt with first.

Common questions

Which system do I need?

It depends on what is wrong with your water. Limescale means a softener. Chlorine taste or smell means a carbon filter. Grit or discolouration means a sediment filter. The purest drinking water comes from reverse osmosis. We test your water first and recommend from that.

How long does installation take?

Most filter and softener installations are done within a day, and the water is only off for part of it. A job that needs new pipework run to a cylinder or plant room takes longer, and we will tell you on the quote.

How often do filters need changing?

As a rough guide, sediment cartridges every six months, carbon cartridges once a year and reverse osmosis membranes every two to three years. Hard water, heavy use or a dirty supply shortens that, which is why we fit a pressure gauge you can check.

Will it reduce my water pressure?

Not noticeably, if the system is sized for your flow rate. Problems come from undersized filters or blocked cartridges, not from filtration itself.

Can I drink softened water?

Softened water contains a little more sodium, so the usual advice is to keep one unsoftened tap in the kitchen for drinking and cooking, and never to use softened water for baby formula. We plumb that drinking tap in as standard.

Is it worth having it professionally installed?

A softener or whole-house filter goes on the incoming main, so a poor joint floods the house, and the water regulations require the right non-return valves and a bypass. Installing it properly is what protects your home and keeps the manufacturer warranty valid.
